The Story Behind

The Group PictureIt was only May, 1998 when these 5boys were completed and called as a group. It all started from  Mattix van Heustein, to Earl Pierson, CJ Auburn, Steaf Keaton, and Mars dela Cruz. At first, it was only Mattix, Earl and CJ in my memory and they were treated as the the boy version of a trio called "Ginger n' Garlic" (I was a member of the group) where the stories I made for the trio became an inspiration to us in the band as we walk in the road to our so-called success.

We met as classmates in sophomore high and became good seatmates, not stable pals. Later, they knew alot about Mattix and Earl and me. I could recall September 23, 1997 when we knew the bond of frienship we had as seatmates were getting deeper and stronger.  That afternoon, 3:30 pm, after saying something about my dream of becoming a singer, they decided to team up with me and make a band out of ourselves. For so many days, we jammed alot and developed a good harmony. I could remember I'm mostly the one that makes the tenor who is CJ on the boy's version. We usually sang in our classroom because our teachers always wanted to hear our harmony. We were also known in New York, where one of my bandmates' relatives live there. They heard how good we were doing here in the Philippines. We also rendered a special no. in our Chapel Hour. Here are some of the songs we sang: "As Long As You Love Me", "All That I Can Do" (our own version of "All I Have To Give"), "Quit Playing Games", "Anywhere For You", "I'll Never Break Your Heart", "Set Adrift On Memory's Bliss", "Everybody", "Just To Be Close" and almost all Backstreet Boys' songs. "Walk Away", "Forever I Do", "I'll Be There For You", "He's Playing Hard To Get", and some others by Solid Harmonie. "End Of The Road", and "Water Runs Dry", "4 Seasons Of Loneliness", "A Song For Mama", "Never" by Boyz II Men. "Sukiyaki" by 4pm. "Butterfly", "Hero", "Breakdown", and some others by Mariah Carey. "Crush On You", "I Will Be Yours", "Ain't That Cute", "Please Don't Go", "I'll Do Anything", "I'm Gonna Miss You Forever", by A.C. Carter. "How Deep Is Your Love", "Back For Good" by Take That. "Shout For Joy" & "Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos?" by Gary Valenciano. "Together Again" by Janet Jackson. "Calvary", & "No Sad Goodbyes" by Tricia Amper and more. Some are our own compositions.

The Group - August 7, 1998One time, one of us asked us if it's about time to get serious with fulfilling our dream, besides, everybody likes our harmony, why not? We called some recording studios over the phone and they agreed in setting an appointment for our audition but we only chose one. So we prepared ourselves for the exciting part. We almost had a contract then. I could recall it was March. The day before my birthday, we had the audition. We bursted out the best music we can create. But after the audition, I felt very ill. Not because I'm gonna be sick but my conscience was not at ease. Then came the big question in my mind: "Is this what I really want in life?". At the last step for the fulfillment of our awaited dream, God woke me up. Little did I realize that He's been telling me to stop this adventure if it'll just hinder my freedom of serving Him wholeheartedly. "What a fault!". As we got out the recording studio, I felt really, really aweful and then I told my pals that I have to go....I mean, break up and stay in church. They felt sad, coz then they knew I was the veteran of the group but I'm the one who's going to leave the precious group. Everything won't fall in place if I'm not with them anymore. And those in New York, who were looking forward to our fame, would be in dismay. Those in the recording company would later have their eyes white because nothing is happening to us anymore after an audition. It was really silly when all the luck was coming, the group was dying. But nothing or no one can stop us. Second by second, God continued to pound my heart, shrugging me more and more, telling me to leave this group if it's blocking my way to God. After all those times, after everything we accomplished, I finally said goodbye and the "book" is closed. Everybody was mad but soon lay low, when time took them. August 7, 1998

After breaking up, I felt free to do what I can do to serve God. I was even asked to participate and make a solo song in an Easter Concert the month after the break up. But none of my bandmates came to the concert especially when I invited them to come. Alot of blessings and improvements in my life came, including the establishing of this group which was once called D.C. (Dream Company whose members were Mattix, CJ, & Earl) where the boys only existed in dreams. Till I changed it to 5boys where I knew they were suitable to be a stable group, a quintet. Singers who were bound to sing for God. Through my experience, through a band I lost, through a dream I didn't accomplish, God granted me wisdom to do more than what I want to do. I may have been very frustrated, but through my frustration came a fruitful product of love for God, a life committed and only for God, the talent used only for God, came out 5boys, whose story or comics will be great blessings to those who read their story. May God continue to touch your life through 5boys.
